What a flooded basement does, and why the source matters
A basement is the lowest point in the house, so it collects whatever gets in and holds it. Water that would drain away from a ground-floor room sits against the foundation, wicks up the drywall, soaks into carpet pad and stored boxes, and reaches the mechanical equipment. The damage is out of sight, which is why it is often found late.
How the water got in decides what the job is. A failed sump pump, a burst supply line or a water heater is usually clean water, and the work is extraction and drying. Groundwater through a foundation crack or up through the slab is ground-contaminated and treated as such. The source also decides the insurance conversation. A burst pipe is normally covered. Sump failure and drain backup usually need a separate water-backup endorsement that has to have been bought. Water that came over the ground or through the foundation is generally excluded as flood or seepage.
